[ open mingle log ] birthday boy boltund
WHO: Laios and friends, old and new
WHAT: A belated birthday dinner, mixed with a housewarming and welcome party
WHEN: Evening of December 1st
WHERE: Laios’s mid-tier house
WARNINGS: Pokémon as food, alcohol mention
a. appetizers
[ Look closely at the quest board lately, and you might find a posting that doesn't quite belong. A flyer, handmade yet carefully crafted, with an important announcement: Please join us for a special dinner! All are welcome!
There's a hastily made correction too, scratching off the November 26th date for December 1st. With the snowstorm and influx of newcomers, changes had to be made. No matter. The party must go on. Just be sure to follow the directions when that new date finally arrives, up the Canopy toward the far corner of the mid-tier housing. You'll eventually find a humbly decorated abode, warmly lit with candles and all manner of foods to try. There's plenty of options to choose from, ranging from soups to skewers, with respect to the various opinions on dietary choices around here.
Then, of course, front and center, are the meals made with special thanks to their contributors. Feel free to taste test them with your fellow party-goers, or perhaps ask your host what exactly might be in this thing. ]
b. entrees
[ Later into the party, you might be interested in starting up a few games to pass the time. There's always those sleepover classics, or maybe one of the board games Laios borrowed from the Archives. Both seem to be all the rage these days. The birthday boy seems plenty excited to join in for either!
For non-game enthusiasts, you're more than welcome to a slice of cheesecake — pumpkin or Pumpkaboo flavor, courtesy of the resident pirate chef Sanji. Now might even be a good time to get Laios to finally open that present you brought, after bringing it all this way. ]
c. desserts
[ It’s a bit later in the evening when Ribombee makes his brief appearance. He doesn’t have much time to stay and chat with the other guests — always a busy bee, he is — but he does manage to pull Laios outside to talk for a time. One could only imagine the birthday wishes being given to one of the guild leader's most special of boys.
Not long after arriving, Ribombee flutters off yet again, leaving behind a gift basket of fancy bottles and cheeses. Laios simply sits at the edge of the platform, staring into the distance, until the bug is finally out of view. All alone now, he lowers his head. Maybe it's time to bring him back in before it gets too cold. ]
Oh! [ Whether he knows you well or not, he puts on a smile for whoever might approach. ] S-sorry, I got a little distracted.
[ If you’re old enough, he might motion toward the basket, offering: ] Want to try some? I don’t really like to drink alone.
[ If you’re younger, or just not inclined toward alcohol, he’ll instead say: ] It’s a nice night, right? I never realized how bright the stars can get.
d. snacks
( ooc: your classic wildcard option. note that along with the meals made for the player quest, you can assume there's more standard options too, with and without meat. all prompts are open to play around with, so feel free to mingle and mix it up too. happy to toss laios at anything! )

I never noticed. [ He blinks up at the sky. As unfamiliar as it should be, he wouldn't be able to tell the difference himself. It was never something he thought to care about. Pieces of home that he never thought he'd leave behind. ] But I didn't really pay attention to the stars back home either.
[ Laios looks at her, smaller than him but not exactly tiny either. Despite the rules around here, she seems to be right around the age when he was allowed his first drink back home. That still doesn't change the fact that he doesn't remember seeing her eat much at all since she got here. ]
... Mm. It won’t be good on an empty stomach. [ There’s a hint of disappointment in his voice. Maybe the special ingredients were a bit much, if all the normal options were gone already before she could try any. ] Do you like cheese? I think there’s some bread in here too.
1/2
She's so tired of being the good girl, the mayor's daughter, the valedictorian. Her mother isn't even in this world. But she's more afraid of what would happen if she let herself slip off her leash.]
2/2
... cheese and bread is fine. Thanks.
[She takes some and does not eat it.]
I, um, made this for you. Maybe it was stupid, since you already have all this food. But I thought, um... well, take a look.
[She slides over some type of confection wrapped in wax paper. When Laios opens it, he'll find a cookie made with some type of nut butter, mushed-up fruit, and oats.]
I heard dogs really like this kind of treat. Um, was that condescending...?
no subject
Ah. [ A sniffle, and then: ] Don't worry. I... always have enough room to try new food.
[ Cephalopods notwithstanding, but not like he has to worry about that with her. He carefully unveils the gift, tail immediately wagging once he realizes what it is. A dog treat, just for him. ]
Why's that condescending? I'm a dog, right? [ Despite the hesitation on her end, he laughs a little under his breath. ] Honestly, I wish people were a little more willing to embrace what they are around here. I don't really get it... [ That said, he completely scarfs it down, as if he hasn't spent all night eating. ]
Mf—it's good! You made this yourself?
[ There's definitely some nut butter and fruit stuck on his teeth now. ]

... I think people like to pretend they're different from animals. When we're like this, it's harder to keep up that distinction. Maybe that's one reason why Akechi's discussion about hunting got so many people angry. [Her voice is barely above a murmur.
She doesn't answer his question for a moment.]
... Yeah. I made it. I've been managing to figure out baking even when I'm like this. [It feels ironic to say it now.]
no subject
[ His voice stays as it was, even-tempered if not a bit flat. He doesn't even notice Noelle going quieter. ]
I think you did a good job without hands though! That must've taken some practice. [ He pulls out the glasses from the basket, setting them aside for her and him. Then, he gnaws at the cork until there's a distinct pop. ] How's the cheese by the way?
no subject
The cheese is really good! [She doesn't particularly want to think about what Pokemon's milk it was made from.] Thanks for your hospitality, faha. And the baking thing has taken practice, stubbornness, and accepting a little help from Pokemon with more... hands and thumbs, I guess. But it's amazing how adaptable Pokemon are, even ones with no hands at all!
[Unbeknownst to her, this may or may not bring Flowey to mind for Laios. Regardless, she'll nudge her glass closer with a hoof and offers to help him pour the best she can.]
... I guess I'm getting used to this whole thing. You seem like you really like your new form. You can run super fast!
no subject
Mm-hm. That’s...
[ He trails off, only half-listening. He’s getting real tired of people not saying what they actually mean around here.
His ears slowly flatten. She must think he’s stupid enough to not see through her, to not realize when he’s being messed with. That’s all anyone ever thinks when they look at him, isn’t it? A simple dog. An unserious tallman. They never listen. They never give him what he wants. ]
If there’s something else you want, you don’t have to lie. I don’t really know you, Noelle. There’s nothing to prove to me, but I’m not going to have you getting sick at my party either.
[ For once, let him be selfish. For once, let him not have to blunt himself just to make other people comfortable. He pours only himself a glass, immediately lapping most of it up. It's tasty, but he's not thinking about that right now. ]

... [Something else she wants. What does she want?]
2/3 actually
[Instead of finishing the sentence, she begins eating the bread and cheese. After a few bites, she stops caring about table manners, too. She tears it apart and licks the crumbs off her lips and off the floor. She grabs some of the fried Tropius fruit, the Paras kebabs, the Stuffed Morelull Caps, and the pomme frites, too. She's sick of pretending she's not an animal in this ecosystem, too.
For a while she doesn't talk at all to him. She just eats. Hungry, selfish.]

[ Oh. He can’t even finish his sentence before she goes completely at it. Laios didn’t know what he expected from her, but it’s obvious it wasn't this. For some reason, he thought she didn't like mushrooms. Maybe she was just being shy this whole time. He stares for a bit longer before deciding he should have seconds too, watching his diet be damned.
At the end of it, Laios moves from satisfied to sluggish, but not full. Never full. What a horrible feeling. He gives them both a pour of honey mead. ]
O-okay, here... [ Even talking when he's this stuffed is hard. He is not going to make it for a run tomorrow morning. ] Slowly, okay? If this is your first time, then you're not going to be used to the burn. [ At least it'll be sweet. All he was able to get at her age was backwater ale. ]

[ There's an uncomfortable pause. Partially because it almost hurts to talk, but also because he's struggling to let the right words out. ]
I'm not upset either. Not at you. It's just— [ His eyes hover over his glass, still untouched. ] —I don't know. I wish things made more sense sometimes.
no subject
... yeah. I know how that feels. [There's a weight behind her words that may seem surprising for her age.]
no subject
[ Maybe it's a little comforting knowing he's not the only one. He takes a small lap of his drink, savoring the sweet burn before sighing quietly. Despite this place having everything he thought he wanted, somehow it's not turning out to be quite what he hoped for. ]
I thought things would be simpler here. Everyone's a Pokémon, but I guess that doesn't change anything. People will still be people.

... It'd make things easier. People are complicated. They do things that don't make sense. [ He glances up at the sky, before lowering his head again for another sip. ] An animal might hurt you, but it won't lie to you to do it, you know?
cw discussion of animal cruelty/death
... lots of people are killed by wild animals. And it's sad. But lots of those people provoked them to begin with.
[People want to play with them. Take pictures with them. Taunt them with food. And then the animal does what it was always going to do. And then the animal is put down.]
