[OPEN] Dreams & Ghosts
Who: Mayaka & you !
What: 2 open prompts (reviewing dreams from last month + attempting to get over her fear of ghosts) and wildcard option
Where: Around Bottlecay Bay + Skull Town
When: Beginning of Feb
Warnings: none atm a. dream review
Perhaps you're passing through the Archives, or the living hall in Skull Town when you spot a Sneasel sitting at a table furiously scrawling out various drawings on paper. Mayaka's gloves have been set aside neatly beside her for now, because she finds it easier to hold onto the charcoal pencils using her bare claws. She's experienced some weird dreams from last month. Though she doesn't remember the exact details, she's been dutifully drawing out the images that lingered in her mind upon waking up. Now, it's time to try to make sense of them. On the table you'll find the following drawings:
1. What appears to be a spaceship, though Mayaka's drawn it to look more like a truck with four wheels underneath.
2. A primordial-looking fish creature. She has given it a pair of cute, anime-sized eyes to make it look more approachable.
3. A black cat with an extra pair of eyes on its stomach. More cat-like than Mimikyu at this point.
4. The drawing she's currently working on, and struggling to capture. She's trying to remember what the alien beings in the final big nightmare looked like, though the large and erratic shapes on paper may not look recognisable to anyone. Mayaka is finding it difficult because she doesn't have an image in mind to associate with what she saw in the nightmare.
She's too caught up with this to notice if someone were to approach...
b. how to deal with ghosts
If you're wandering around Bottlecap Bay, you'll find Mayaka outside her house in the Lum Berry housing area, rooted on the spot.
Her attention is focused on a small clay sculpture she's placed in the garden of her front porch. It's a little handmade ghost figurine with a hairbow on its head. While it might look strangely cute, the more you look at it, the more you'll notice that it's two eyes seem to be gazing directly at you with an unblinking Stare™.
This is the ghost that's been chasing her in her dreams, but she's too scared to get rid of it! (Also, the fact that it was a gift to her from Catrina doesn't help!)
The Sneasel is shaking a little, and it's not from the cold weather. She's standing a safe distance away from the figurine, muttering to herself: "It's just a doll... it's just a dolll..."
(Dolls are creepy too, though??)
c. wildcard!
for any other threads or ideas that come up!

Did Kinger not mention the ghost part before? Oops.

The fan clatters on the floor of the cave, the sound echoing down the tunnel. Mayaka hurries to pick it up before she turns her attention back to the glowing mushroom.
"You didn't say anything about Rotom being a ghost! I thought it was just an electric thing! What if there are other ghosts here?!"
She is trying to best to keep her voice low, lest something else overhears them.
no subject
Deja vu is definitely a novel experience when you have amnesia, but Kinger can't help but think back to Mildenhall Manor.
"Ghosts here aren't really real ghosts, anyway. I can yell ghost energy and I'm just a mushroom!"
no subject
While a Ghost-type might not be a ghost -- case in point, Shoka -- that doesn't eliminate the possibility of ghosts. Or the fact that some Ghost-types behave and look very much like them!
"And you weren't always just a mushroom, right?" When it comes to Pokémon and the attacks they can use, that's another can of worms.
no subject
Kinger cuts himself off. Probably not the time to explain the remembrance festival, especially since it's hard to know if those were real ghosts or just memories that seemed like ghosts.
"Anyway, no, I was human before. Well, immediately before I was a living chess piece trapped in a digital simulation run by an overzealous AI ringmaster, but I still consider myself human on the inside."
no subject
"I'm glad you got out of there."
Though, if she thinks about it, Kinger's just gotten himself trapped as a mushroom in different world now. Maybe the food, sights and creatures here are friendlier, at least? Mayaka shakes her head to try to get rid of these pessimistic thoughts.
"Anyway... what's the plan, Kinger-san? Do we find a spot, place the fan down and just wait?"
no subject
Kinger pulls out his notebook to check over the details.
"We knew they were headed this way, we found their trail, we know they were looking at a washing machine, we know 'Wait... Wait, stop!' ... Huh, I don't think I wrote that one."
no subject
"What're those?!"
The Sneasel attempts to hide behind Kinger even though she is taller than him.
did some digging and heavy downmoor's caves are. Very Very Strange, it turns out
"Oh, those must be those charged stones." Kinger also notices that in addition to the light from the stones themselves, the light is bouncing off of the reflective cave walls. "Oh, these stones are like mirrors! That will let us keep an eye out in all directions."
Kinger examines the reflection in the stone and, instead of a Morelull and a Sneasel looking back, it's a Shiinotic and a Sneasler looking much more tired and jaded with adventuring. Kinger yelps and scrambles back.
not them taking turns to be scared...
"I think these walls are just messing with our reflections."
She doesn't look that tall, nor does she wish to be!
no subject
You're right, let's keep going. [As Kinger turns away he's pretty sure he catches his tired Shiinotic reflection sighing at the idea of going further in.]
(gonna take some liberties with the ecology here..)
Hold on a sec! [She tells Kinger just before they leave the chamber. She gently places the fan down and pulls out a notebook to quickly make a sketch of the cave and note how the reflections interact with one another. Kinger's glowing mushroom cap serves its purpose as a little light for her to make out what she's drawing.
The Shiinotic and Sneasler stand upright, mirroring them in the reflections. With her attention glued in her notebook, Mayaka won't realise that a floating object, shadowed in the darkness, descends behind her -- it's counterpart doesn't appear in the reflection on the wall either.]
oops i did not mean to flip the tormatting on you i must have been on autopilot during the last one
"Oh, hello there! Have you seen a Rotom?" Kinger asks the reflectionless crystal rabbit. The Carbink responds by floating over and examining the fan next to Mayaka.
no subject
"Huh?"
Her gaze darts back and forth between the Carbink in front of her, and its missing reflection.
"Weird. Must be part of the visual illusion," she concludes before noticing how the floating rock has taken interest in the fan.
She playfully nudges Kinger and says: "See? Told you pink was a nice colour."
no subject
The Carbink agrees too, as it quickly flips over to snag the fan on one of its stony ears and starts quickly floating off with it. "Yoink!"
Kinger yelps, as the Carbink flies away much quicker than he expected it could. "After that rabbit!"
no subject
"HEY! Don't take stuff that isn't yours!"
She follows after Kinger, light on her feet, ready to burst into a Quick Attack to close the distance between them and the fleeing Carbink. She looks over to gauge how speedy the Morelull is with those tiny little legs on his, not wanting to leave him behind.
if speed isn't an option, cartoon physics are!
"Aaaaagh!" Kinger screams, not even pretending he did that on purpose. It is a much faster way of moving if he could do it on command, though!
im sorry for laughing kinger
"Hey! You okay, Kinger-san?" she jogs after the both of them.
With Kinger helping to light the way, the Sneasel is confident enough to launch herself into a Quick Attack to close the gap. She picks up speed, feeling the wind brush against her cheeks, and jumps over Kinger with claws outstreched, aiming to grab firmly onto their stolen pink fan.
Just before she can make contact with the Carbink, it unexpectedly veers right down a side-tunnel. Mayaka can't change trajectory mid-air, and can tell that she's about to slam into the wall.
"Argh, damn it!"
If Kinger doesn't do something, Mayaka's best bet is to catch her claws against the walls to reduce impact.
this seems like a good time for my reward redemption,
"Mayaka, no!"
Kinger reaches out with the mycelium tendril that's holding the Grumpearl, less for any sort of effect and more out of emotion. Then he sees the reflection on the wall. Kinger and Mayaka are still in their normal Morelull and Sneasel forms, no changes there this time, but standing next to where Kinger is lying on the ground is a third Pokémon. Seemingly just a palette swap of Kinger, it's another Morelull, but this one is shiny and wearing a red cloak instead of Kinger's purple.
For a moment, everything slows down. Kinger thinks it's just in his head but Mayaka actually starts moving more slowly through the air. It also looks at first like the materials of the walls are starting to change. But no, it's more of a translucent box of colorful squares forming around them, rounded squares like pillows. Kinger rushes forward at speeds he didn't realize he had as Mayaka gently collides with the soft quasi-real wall of the pillow fort. Kinger looks away from the reflection as Mayaka lands, more concerned with her now than the mocking reflection, and the Trick Room fades.
"Are you okay?"
cinema
The Sneasel bounces back from the Trick Room wall, landing onto the ground with a light thud. She slowly cracks open one eye, registering that she's not in any pain. Everything looks like it's gone back to normal, and a familiar Morelull is standing over her.
"Yeah, I am, thanks to you! You did something incredible, didn't you?" she exclaims while sitting up, still trying to wrap her mind around he managed to transform the environment.
Not wanting to lose sight of the Carbink, she quickly points out the side-tunnel to Kinger, which seems to lead into another open room.
Re: cinema
Kinger turns back to the mirrored wall and the other Morelull isn't there anymore, it is just a perfect reflection of the two of them.
"Nevermind that. We have to get that fan!"
Kinger scurries quickly away down the side tunnel. As Kinger turns away, the other Morelull pokes her head out in the reflection, standing far enough back that she was blocked by reflection-Mayaka.
BRO I JSUT REALISED WAS THAT HIS WIFE..... STOP ✋🏻🛑⛔️ T_T
They enter a large chamber that strikes the Sneasel as eerily familiar. But that can't be right. She's never been here before. And yet, she can't shake the feeling that she knows exactly where they are now. The worn down shelves, the abandoned tables and chairs organised in such a precise manner...
Before she can verbalise what she's thinking to Kinger, she spots the Carbink peeking out from behind a stack of tablets covered in dust.
"Over there!"
no subject
Kinger sees the Carbink, and also the fan sitting behind it. There's something... different about the fan, though. Kinger slowly walks up close to try and see. It almost looks like the base has bulged out a bit, and someone has drawn closed eyes on it.
no subject
"Is that... Rotom? Did your idea actually work?"
Even though the question is directed at Kinger, the Carbink produces an affirmative hum as it floats around them, seeming quite pleased with itself.
no subject
Are they sleeping?
[The Carbink looks down sadly, and Kinger can tell immediately why. The fan blades are barely twitching, in a facsimile of the shallow breathing that the comatose patients in the clinic have. Kinger's already grown accustomed to spotting that in non-biological Pokémon through his visits to check on Need.
Kinger and Need hadn't spoken that much, but she did help him and Sanji look for Noelle so he will be forever grateful for that. Now he's thinking about the others, like Tenna, whose joy for entertainment reminded him of the best parts of Caine. Now there's someone who Kinger never even got a chance to meet.]
