Zucchini is a wild grower. And squashes want to cross-pollinate with anything they can get into. There's places back home where neighbors will just leave a bag of extra zucchini on the porch of someone to get rid of it.

Also, anything we get a bumper crop of, I really want to preserve and pickle as much of as possible, unless we can work out a Pokemon-powered freezer.

[wolfcut]

Guess that means the guild's gotta start liking zucchini real soon.

[ Including him, but who's asking. ]

Pickling's great too. The more stock the better. [ He jots down a few more notes. ] Can you show me around? Promise I won't eat up most of your day. I'm just trying trying to get ideas. [ He huffs a little at his expense. ] You know I'm not much of a veggie guy.

Sure! So we've brought in the harvest from the Winter Garden--that was mostly brassicas, because they can give you a late planting. So what we have on-hand right now is a lot of broccoli, spinach, kale, brussel sprouts. Those vegetables all belong to the same family and shared a common ancestor, but selective breeding for different aspect led to the vegetables we know and love today, in that family.

[He begins to walk, pointing to the beds prepared for planting.]

This one here is going to be mostly aromatics, garlic and onions and shallots and the like. We can harvest the garlic scapes as we go, use those in cooking. Also, I've been meaning to mug some Farfetch'd for their leeks, to see if those are something that can be planted.

The next one over here is lettuces and herbs. And past that, some of our root vegetables. Carrots, parsnips, turnips. And this one is going to be a three sisters plot, because I always wanted to try it at home, but didn't actually have the space or climate to attempt corn. So corn, squash and beans. The beans can use the corn as a trellis, and the squash acts as ground cover. And of course peppers and tomatoes. Tomatoes are kind of my favorite thing to grow.

[ That's quite a lot of information to write down while also trying to keep up with those tiny legs of his. This is fine. He's had more stressful interrogations surely. As long as he captures the highlights, he won't be going back to the kitchen with nothing to show for it. He starts to talk under his breath, just to keep it all straight. ]

Salads are easy. Could boil some. Maybe even make a stew. You know— [ He suddenly stops with a cheeky grin. ] —roasted duck with leek doesn't sound half bad. [ He knows that's in poor taste, but carnivores have to eat too. Anyway. Moving on. ]

Sounds like you're gonna be plenty busy come summer, kid. [ His ears flick. ] What's so special about tomatoes?

Tomatoes? They taste good.

[Ume grins broadly; he clearly wasn't put off by the roasted duck comment in the slightest, his cheery demeanor remaining.]

Were you expecting some lofty metaphor about how it's impossible for them to grow without receiving adequate support or something?

[ His grin gets a bit bigger in turn. ]

Wouldn’t put it past you, kid. But they make for a great sauce. I’ll give you that.

[ With a small ear flick, he glances toward the crops. ]

Though if you have any other favorite recipes, I can add ‘em into the rotation.

...well, if you can make a decent omurice, you'd be my best friend in the whole bay. I know it won't be like my sister's, but anything close would be awesome.

[His tail is wagging preemptively at the very idea.]

Omu... rice? Did I say that right?

[ Guy from 1980s America who hardly eats on a good day probably botched that one a little. ]

What's in that? [ A beat. ] Other than rice, presumably.

[ Look at that tail wag. Of course he's got to try to get that made for Umemiya now. ]

Oh! It's omelette rice. Rice cooked with tomato and chicken if you have it, and whatever other vegetables are in the fridge, topped with an omelette. Some places do a thin sheet of omelette, some do a rolled one that will flop down on top of the rice if you cut it open. And you drizzle some ketchup on top? It's absolutely the perfect meal.

[wolfcut]

Omelet. Of course. [ A small head tap for himself. Obviously that's what it was. ] Sounds like my kind of meal, actually. I'm pretty good with eggs.

[ Literally the only thing he knows how to cook well aside from bacon. ]

Would've put my bottle of ketchup back home to good use too.
