edgewater: parvati looking at something off camera with her chin up, upset (sad)

[CLOSED] wouldn't it be nice if we could wake up

Who: Parvati and Kinger
What: OVER THE BRINK
Where: the area beyond the cliffs
When: mid-april
Warnings: Typical quest peril/spookiness, memory issues, possible setting-typical cws per character

Parvati and Kinger have been following the trail along the coast for hours now, steps falling into line monotonously. The wind rips at the shoreline, causing Parvati to tug her scarf a little tigher for warmth. She's done long treks like this before, countless times. And she's been on journeys that span days, even if she is months out of practice. As such, she's sufficiently well-prepared with enough supplies on her person for the two of them. Tinkatons having insane strength certainly comes in handy -- her hammer is, as ever, resting on her shoulder just in case something comes to a fight. She draws in a deep breath through her nose (do Tinkatons have those?) as the edge of the shore begins to dip a little.

She turns back to her mushroom companion. She's been a little worried about Kinger the entire trek, honestly. She's not too sure of his combat abilities (not that she minds, she's strong enough for the pair of them), and... well...

She finally stops when the beach fully comes into view below. "You hangin' in there okay, Kinger?" She asks, carefully feeling out the slope's edge with her foot. Nyoka taught her the basic gist of figuring out if the ground would hold, but she isn't sure if she's doing it right. And she was taught that with a human foot as a reference, not the stubs she has now.

"Never been better!" Kinger stretches side to side, as though he's stretching his nonexistent spine. "Nothing like a walk in nature to reinvigorate yourself!"

Memory issues aside, Kinger is very good at the basics of sticking together on an adventure. At night when his memory starts to recover, he is apologetic about slowing things down, but he's actually keeping up decently well. At least when he's getting forgetful, he can keep his spirits up a little bit more. When he remembers why he's out here, he gets a lot more dour. A lot of his friends are lost out there somewhere.

"Once we get down there, we can even go for a swim!"

"Don't worry about me, you already have that big hammer to carry!" Kinger says, shockingly reasonably. "I can use the ol' Stick in the Ground technique if I start to fall to my certain death."

Someone has probably told him by now that it's called Ingrain, but he doesn't use it too much so Stick in the Ground sticks in his head more. Kinger's mycelium tendrils do seem very good at getting a foothold through the treacherous path.

"Parvati!"

Kinger leaps down the rest of the way after her (smaller and lighter things are less affected by falling, after all!) and stands next to her, looking over her for injuries.

"Let me know if you need a butterfly puff." Meanwhile, Kinger has not figured out enough about Pollen Puff to know what to look for as far as a real name.

god this would be miserable if we ACTUALLY had to track PP

"Loud and clear, save it for if we're horribly injured!"

Spirits still high, and if anyone didn't know him they'd assume Kinger was too. He squints out into the fog, his mushrooms starting to glow to try and cut through it a bit.

"Pretty low render distance for this one..."

"I wonder if we could set up some kind of landmark to keep track of things."

Broken clock, right twice a day, though it's hard to know what could be a useful landmark in this pea soup fog.

"Anyway, between the cliff and the water we'll know to turn when our feet get wet or we smack into a rock, and we can call out to them. Fog can't muffle sound, right?"

[Results, somehow I didn't realize it was multiple days even once they GOT to the beach. Hopefully okay to skip to the first NPC encounter]

Kinger continues carefully, finding some intentionally placed driftwood suggesting that Maya and Hatenna also had the idea of landmarks. Then sees something else: new shapes moving around in the fog.

"Maya? Hatenna?"

The shapes respond, clearly not their friends:

"...get...lost! ...want
..you...hurt!"

"AGH!" Kinger yelps in Astonishment and dodge rolls backwards. "Parvati!"

[Sorry, here are the results.]

Kinger squints into the fog as he backs up next to Parvati, and backs up until he feels a rock against the back of his tendrils.

"No..."

And then he feels two large, clawed hands reach out at him.

"But there's someone behind me..."

Back up, further into it!? Wait, Kinger knows what the plan is now. Kinger falls backwards, being caught by the hidden claws, and then Ingrains himself in the sand, his mycelium struggling to make purchase, hoping he can hold the assailant in place long enough for Parvati to swing.

"Now!" He yells, ducking down sharply as the other claw shoots out of the fog towards him.
