guard to port w/ ren ~

Mayaka is pleasantly surprised when she sees who's the other Pokemon assigned to guard the teleporters this afternoon.

"Ren-kun!" She bounds up to him with a smile. "Have you had enough rest since we came back from the rescues?"

The grin on her face flattens as she scratches her head sheepishly.

"You and Akechi really helped me out a lot... not just with climbing the cliffs, but all the battles too. I should've been more helpful."

"Mayaka!" Ren greets her back with a smile, waving to her with his paw. "I'm good, I'm good. Glad to see you here."

And he is! Mayaka's a good quest buddy, and he feels like a decently solid friendship is starting to form between them. Somehow, he has the feeling that if he were back home, he'd have heard Lavenza in his ear already. I am thou, thou art I...

But that aside, his eyebrow raises a bit at her statement. He didn't think she did that badly, personally.

"You were plenty helpful," he says with a hum. "besides, practice makes perfect. You're still getting used to things, right? You'll get there, sooner than you think."

The smile turns into a bit of a smirk, and he puts his paw up to his chin, fluttering his lashes.

"We can't all have this much swagger from the get-go after stumbling out of the ocean in a new body."

He's clearly trying to make her laugh- the expression, on a Sprigatito, looks more adorable than cool.

Mayaka had wanted to sulk a bit more, insist that she's been around for half a year already, that she's had plenty of time to get used to things, and that she should try to get better at the stuff she dislikes so that she can be more reliable during quests...

Only for Ren's little stunt to completely distract her from the stuff that's been weighing on her mind, at least for now. Mayaka chuckles, genuinely amused, and thankful that he doesn't seem to hold anything against her.

"Heh. Looks like Ren-kun's a real charmer," she says jokingly. "I guess that's why Akechi likes you so much, huh?"

Ren's smile turns more genuine as he lets out a small laugh. Success.

"You know it," he says, winking. "After all, who could resist this personality?"

Real charming, Ren.

Mayaka shakes her head in mock disapproval, before deciding to ask something that's been on her mind for quite awhile now. Ever since she knew they were an item, to be exact.

"Y'know, I'm more curious about what you like about Akechi."

While some people might ask this question because they're nosy about other people's relationships, Mayaka is genuinely baffled (but yes, still nosy as a high school girl should be).

"Oh?"

He... guesses it's not all that surprising of a question. Akechi can be... a lot. Even to him, sometimes. He hums, looking away for a moment.

"There's no single or easy way to answer that," he says, after a moment. "Akechi is... he's smart- so goddamn smart, and charming, attractive- you should've seen him when we were still humans, Mayaka. He's... he's stubborn. He won't stop, he'll go through with the most bullheaded shit because he's set his mind to it- and competitive. There's a reason we're rivals first and-" Ren pauses, just for a moment, lips curling into a satisfied smile, "-partners second. He's so strong, and we fight so much, and-"

Ren briefly pauses, then smiles at Mayaka, wryly.

"He pisses me off so much."

A pause, and a shake of his head. "He's so fucking stupid sometimes, Mayaka, and prideful. We fight over the stupidest things. Everything gets turned into a competition. He doesn't believe me when I say he deserves good things, even though he's- he's a person. Like me, like everyone. He's an idiot with no sense of self-preservation, and despite being so smart he's just so-" Ren makes a gesture that doesn't make much sense, and yet, he's still grinning, "-y'know?"

Well, that last part sounds pretty negative, but then Ren continues-

"I never have as much fun as when I'm having a fight or competition with him. It's... I can't describe it. It's special. You get me?"

There's a smell pause, and then, more quietly: "Most of all, I think... it's the fact that he's one of the only things I chose for myself. Caring about him, I mean," Ren murmurs, his manic grin turning softer. "We were... enemies. Pittied against each other by fate, but... I chose to spit fate in the face. I chose to become his friend. I... love all my other friends, I do, but Akechi- Goro, he's... different. Special. In so many ways he doesn't even see. It drives me nuts."

... Ren takes a deep breath, having spilled more than he meant to, and gives Mayaka a small, awkward smile.

"Does that make sense?"

Mayaka raises her brow in stern disbelief when Ren describes Akechi as attractive. This is probably because she's only never known him in his Pokemon form.

As the Sprigatito excitedly regales all his thoughts about Akechi, Mayaka sits down next to the teleporter and continues to listen. She leans to the side and cradles her chin with one of her claws.

All the stuff she dislikes about Akechi, Ren sees that too, but he's also able to see all these other qualities that Mayaka's not quite aware of, nor does she really care for. The part of them going from enemies to sweethearts does make her smile a little, though.

When Ren finally looks over and for her response, she can only shake her head and say: “Ren-kun… that’s the most I’ve ever heard you speak in one go. And it was all to do with Akechi?!”
