Impromptu Oran Sleepover

Who: Oran newbies
What: Having fun with communal dens
When: Sometime after Mightyena gathered them up
Where: The Spire, low tier dens
Warnings: Will add if anything comes up, but not anticipating anything

[As everyone knows by now, the Oran Berries depend heavily on communal living, sharing a bed is simply to be expected. For some, this experience was temporary. Mightyena was kind enough to lend the mysterious misplaced Pokémon a place to rest, but now some of them have moved on.

For others, this is now a part of life, and it's time to get used to it. The Oran Berries value treating everyone like friends and family, after all, so you're expected to do the same! Why not have some fun with it?

Whether you've noticed your fellow newcomers are all gathering in one den, or you suddenly find yourself dragged into the the party against your will, everyone is invited! Everyone's going through the same thing, belong to the same guild, you gotta stick together.....right?]

[[ooc: Feel free to use this as a mingle log! We have nine Oran Berries (I think???) and although the dens are said to hold up to eight, I think some members are small enough that we should be able to include everyone!]]

Oh. No. It wasn't anyone here. Just trying to make things work from what I remember from before here.

[That's too bad. He wouldn't have minded seeing a demonstration - he's seen Pokemon use Shadow Ball plenty before, of course, but not like this.]

I have tried a bit of that, but it has not gone terribly well. It is probably different, seeing it as a human!

Probably, but it's still a pain ... [ a put upon sigh, theatric and overexaggerated. ] I can get halfway there on Shadow Ball. Maybe. If we're generous. Will-o-Wisp I don't even get that much.

[ and then the rest of their Pokemon, well. he doesn't think he's likely to be pulling off any Iron Heads or Discharges anytime soon. Chandelure really is the only option when it comes to attempted mimicry. ]

[Ingo really can't mimic any members of his team. There's a tiny bit of overlap if one includes all possibilities - Alakazam can learn a few ghost-type attacks - but nothing naturally-learned. He's mostly just drawing on his memories of fighting Akari's Typhlosion.

He stops himself before he can say any of this. He apparently did have a fire/ghost partners once upon a time, after all. No need to point out again that he doesn't remember.]

I'd like to try and learn Will-o-Wisp! Well, both of those, of course - but I can already make fire, so it seems as though Will-o-Wisp is the next step! It's something like a halfway point between regular fire and ghost fire...at least, it seems that way to me.

Seems like it. For a fire-type move, a lot of ghosts sure do learn it naturally. Even if they have nothing to do with fire.

... It's weird. [ For a moment he doesn't elaborate, seeming to get lost in thought for a moment before coming back to himself; ] Normal type usually is fairly physical. Or flexible. Like Linoone getting Blizzard and Persian getting water moves. But when I think of things from that direction— for what I can do, I mean— I get the feeling that's not right either.

[ It kind of feels like he's barely a normal type at all, considering the things he's figured out so far are overwhelmingly ghost with a splash of dark for flavor. Sure, he can work on Swift and Slash. That's two things. Meanwhile, on the ghost side of things... ]

You are right. I have never seen Captain Zisu's Zoroark use anything but normal, ghost, or dark moves. She is well-practiced at teaching Pokemon new moves, so she certainly could do that if she cared to...

[Does it mean that Zoroark cannot learn any other moves, or just that she had not wanted to use them? He cannot say. They never discussed that in particular.]

... Wonder if they have anything like TMs or TRs here. [ Technical Slates? ] Maybe I can just go through all of them until something clicks.

Oh, ah - only Will-o-Wisp. But it has not been coming out particularly...wispy. Mostly it is just a smaller Ember. [Most of his moves seem to just be Ember. It's a little frustrating - he's fully evolved!]

Technical machines. And Technical records. Basically instructions on how to do various moves stored on whatever current technology is portable and convenient enough for it. Like a move tutor except it's just a book and not a person.

... Hmm. If there's something I'm lucky in. It's that the moves I've been trying are all very different from each other. Harder to accidentally do one thing when aiming for another like that. But fire ...

How big or small can you make Ember?

That was about as small as it can get, back there!

[He was trying not to set anything in the kitchen on fire, after all!]

And I have gotten it fairly big, while trying to use Flamethrower! But it was still distinctly embers...do you know what I mean? There's quite a difference between that and a Flamethrower, no matter how large they may be! [.....] I suppose that is why Pokemon cannot learn a move at too low a level no matter how often they see it done. But we are fully evolved, so I think we ought to be capable!

[Even if he is a little bit frustrated, he's still not really all that upset by it. It's just something to improve upon.]

I think I do? Flamethrower is more of a steady stream and Ember is not. More bits and pieces than continuous flow, also intensity of the flames is different. That is what you mean, right?

[ not terribly unlike the various different electric moves, now that he's thinking about it. final product probably definitely doesn't reflect all the processes that got there, at least from an observer's standpoint, but they're still quite different. ]

We are probably capable. I think. Bodies are, we just don't know how to actually do it... Work up to it, built in safety checks. [ so yeah, probably why Pokemon can't learn a move lower than they should, typically, just by watching... though it does make his mind wander a bit toward egg moves— not relevant to the current discussion, though. ] Probably why I have had more luck when just doing, instead of when I am actually thinking about and trying to aim for something specific.

I have tried for Night Daze. But I think that Dark darkness and Ghost shadows must be too different. Not the same, not for overlap, not to build on. Or maybe Hisuian ones just can't do it anymore.

[As to the rest...he agrees, generally. He's had more luck in simply acting than in thinking about it as well! Granted, his opportunities to simply act have been limited thus far, but they're all starting to go out on missions and things; he intends to pick up several of those! That ought to result in a little more action.]

I have never seen one do that...but that hardly means they cannot do it! Dark-darkness and ghost shadows are clearly quite different. [One is super-effective against the other, after all!] Besides, Unovan Zoroark are not especially known in Hisui. I doubt that anyone has ever really tried.

It is a signature move ... well. No. People thought it was a signature move for them for a while. But now they have realized that there is a legendary that can also perform it.

[ which is still very funnily limited distribution, but disqualifies it from counting as signature! ]

They are different but ghost and dark usually have a lot of overlap... [ super effective against the same things, those from one type usually can learn a decent amount of the other, that sort of thing... still, a small sigh, though like Ingo he doesn't sound particularly fussed overall. ] Obviously not enough, though. Oh well. Either I can or I can't. Verdict to be made further down the line than where we are currently at.

Lunala. Known as the Beast That Calls the Moon. Counterpart to Solgaleo. Same way Palkia and Dialga and Zekrom and Reshiram are to each other.

[ Solgaleo, however, does not have any instances of stealing what was previously thought to be a signature move, though. not to Emmet's knowledge, anyway? ]

A dark type?

I wonder which it originated with - Lunala or Zoroark? It hardly matters, but it's interesting!

Psychic and Ghost, apparently! But that is a verrrry interesting question, yup. Couldn't tell you the answer though.

Surely it must have been the Zoroark, then? What business does a psychic and ghost type have inventing new dark-type moves? Legendary or not!

... Now that you mention it. I am trying to think of if there are any signature moves that don't match type now. Hold on a second.

Maybe it's just the abrupt way the subject a while ago was put to rest leaving a slightly unsettled feeling in him, underneath the rest of it. This just- seems almost a little too easy, after, but ... it doesn't feel forced, so it's fine, right? This is enough?

...nothing is immediately coming to mind. But you know a much wider range of Pokemon than I do.

[Which is...strange to say. Ingo's accustomed to being the local expert. But even if he's tended to remember Pokemon facts easier than most, the truth is that he's still iffy about Pokemon he hasn't encountered since losing his memories.]

Hmm. Might not help as much as you think. Anything I can think of right now. Status and support moves only. Slowking's Chilly Reception for example.

[ and that doesn't really count, probably. well, it does but not in the same way a more offensive move would be.

I just know more because I see a lot more. People travel a lot more I bet. And communicating with people across the world, a lot easier! So there is more spread of what people know. That's all.

Mmm, yes, I suppose that's true. I can often place Pokemon from other regions after a moment or two of thinking about it, if I can see them first. They occasionally come in with travelers, or of course through the space-time rifts.

[Only having the name is more difficult. Sometimes records of Laventon's stick in his mind; sometimes he can't picture the foreign Pokemon at all, and the rest slides away with it.]

... The things you don't recall or have missed. The way I see it. You will either remember them or you will not. If you do not then you can learn them anew. There is no problem with that.

But would it help if I used the pearls more?

[ For pairing images to names, that is. Or is this something for more organic discovery, like taking a jaunt around town just to see what they can find? The static with Zebstrika, after all... ]

Is there a way we can try them with just the two of us? I would hate to disrupt everyone else with it! [not to mention he doesn't love the idea of an audience]

Mmm. I don't know? Could ask the Grumpig brothers maybe. If there is a way. Probably would be easier if one of us was psychic.
